| In May 1980 at the Naval Memorial Laboe near Kiel, the society of surviving Scharnhorst crewmen unveiled and dedicated this plaque to the memory of the battleships dead. The inscription read: "Battleship Scharnhorst. Sunk on 26 December 1943 in the Polar Sea in battle with superior British naval forces. To the memory of more than 2,000 fallen comrades and the proud ship. Scharnhorst Kameradschaft, May 1980". |
